Rand slips amid weak mining data and global trade tensions

The South African rand weakened sharply on Tuesday, following disappointing local mining production data and lingering pressure from ongoing trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, which weighed on global risk sentiment. By 14h29 GMT, the rand was trading at R17.41 to the US dollar, approximately 0.60% weaker than Monday’s close. Meanwhile, the dollar traded flat against a basket of major currencies.

Locally, data from Statistics South Africa showed mining production fell by 0.20% year-on-year in August, compared to a revised 5.10% increase in July. Economists surveyed by Reuters had expected a 1% rise, while analysts at Nedbank forecast a more modest 0.70% increase, citing support from stronger precious metal prices. Gold - traditionally viewed as a safe-haven asset in times of uncertainty - surged to a record high above $4 100 on Tuesday, driven by expectations of a US interest rate cut. Silver also reached an all-time peak.

On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index slipped 0.40%.

In the United States, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones moved into positive territory, while the Nasdaq pared earlier losses during afternoon trading. Investors appeared to look past US-China trade tensions and turned their focus to the start of earnings season and comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Major banks, including Citigroup, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs, all beat earnings expectations. Meanwhile, Powell signalled signs of further labour market weakness, reinforcing market expectations of a rate cut later this month.

In the UK, the FTSE 100 ended Tuesday largely unchanged. Gains in defensive sectors helped offset declines in mining and energy shares amid renewed concerns over US-China trade relations. Market sentiment remained cautious after China imposed restrictions on US units of South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, stoking fears of further escalation. EasyJet was a notable gainer, jumping over 8% following reports that Italy’s Mediterranean Shipping Co may be exploring a takeover bid. Among miners, Anglo American fell more than 3%, Antofagasta dropped over 2%, Glencore lost 1.50%, while Rio Tinto ended flat after posting a 10% year-on-year rise in Q3 copper production.

Across Europe, equities ended lower, with both the Stoxx 50 and Stoxx 600 down around 0.30%. Risk-sensitive sectors such as automotive and mining led the declines, while defensive sectors like telecoms, real estate, and utilities outperformed as investors sought safer assets.

In Asia, Japanese markets retreated following a national holiday. The Nikkei 225 fell 2.58% to close at 46 847, while the broader Topix index dropped 1.99% to 3 134. Political uncertainty weighed on sentiment after Japan’s Komeito party announced its departure from the ruling coalition, complicating Sanae Takaichi’s bid to become the next Prime Minister and unsettling the so-called “Takaichi trade”.

In China, markets also declined. The Shanghai Composite dropped 0.62% to close at 3 865, while the Shenzhen Component tumbled 2.54% to 12 895. Gains from earlier in the session were erased amid renewed concerns of a prolonged US-China trade dispute. China announced retaliatory restrictions on five US units of Hanwha Ocean, in response to Washington’s probes into Chinese maritime and logistics sectors.

In commodities, WTI crude oil futures fell 2% to $58.30 per barrel on Tuesday - a five-month low - after the International Energy Agency's market outlook reinforced expectations of a growing supply surplus. Gold prices briefly surged as high as $4 179 per ounce before paring gains, as investors increased safe-haven purchases amid heightened geopolitical tension and speculation of a US rate cut.
